Welcome to this newsletter and inaugural post! For those who don’t know me, I’m Chris Kempt - a consultant working in the games, mobile, and tech space. I tend to advise on product, production, and business challenges; you can read more about that on my site.
This year marks my 25th working in the interactive industries, with nearly 20 of those specialising in games. In some ways, my career thus far has resembled a Rube Goldberg contraption or the rollerskating sequence from ‘Some Mothers Do ‘Ave Em,’ where I’ve seized a series of opportunities as they arose, such as adopting a new technology or responding to a change in the marketplace. The side effect of this is that I’ve often found myself in a position where I’m at (or close to) the cutting edge of things and with no one to learn from.
While the benefits of having to figure things out for oneself can be huge (it often leads to a much deeper understanding than you would gain otherwise), the significant downside is that it sometimes makes it difficult to articulate those learnings to others as you tend not to build up the language to do so; you just crack on and get things done.
But now, having spent the last few years consulting to other businesses and building up the required words and tools with which to communicate the things that I have learned, I’m in a position to be able to share that knowledge and bits of relevant news on a short-form and weekly basis, coming out every Sunday.
Please do subscribe; I’m sure you’ll find it of interest and hopefully quite helpful :)
Thanks for reading, and see you in the next post!
